5 Tips for Fighting Sinus Infections This Winter

‘Tis the season for holiday parties, delicious cookies and… a sinus infection during winter?

Winter already gets a bad rap for being cold and flu season, but a sinus infection as you can see more cases during winter is common in the colder months, too. Don’t want sinus trouble to keep you down this holiday season? Follow these tips to help you stay healthy.

1.  Beware of mold.

Pesky indoor mold can trigger allergies, which in turn can develop into sinus infections. Watch out for less-expected mold culprits, like artificial Christmas trees and holiday décor; when decorations aren’t stored properly, especially if they’re kept in damp storage areas throughout the year, they can develop mold.

2.  Counteract the heat attack.

Hyperactive heaters and radiators can dry out your indoor air, and that can wreak havoc on your sinuses. Keep moisture in the air with a humidifier, or create a steam room in your bathroom by sitting with the shower on and the door closed for 10 to 15 minutes.

3.  Don’t live off cocktails alone.

Holiday parties? Alcohol and mixed drinks often come with the territory. But too much alcohol and too little water can lead to dehydration, which isn’t healthy for the sinuses. Drink lots of H2O this winter to keep your body in balance…and your sinuses will be sure to thank you

4.  Be careful with pets.Christmas Pets

Now’s the time for family togetherness, and in many households, that means four-legged friends, too. If you’re sensitive to pet allergens, be sure to vacuum rugs frequently to help remove pet dander, and don’t let animals sleep on the bed.

Between shopping, socializing and finishing end-of-year work projects, December is set up to be a busy month. Make time for yourself, though, and try not to skimp on sleep. When your body is well rested, it’s easier to stay healthy or fend off infections once they set in.
