Alternative Sinus Infection Remedies to Get You Back On Your Feet
Feeling under the weather is never enjoyable. However, coming down with a sinus infection can make anyone feel absolutely miserable. The pressure, pain, and the overall discomfort can be too much to bear, so it’s understandable that many rush to the doctor to get it treated. While taking antibiotics for sinus pain and infections is unnecessary, there are a variety of simple sinus infection remedies you can try first to see what gives you the relief you need until you can see a doctor.
When you get too much mucus built up in the cavities behind your face, they can become swollen and inflamed, causing you a great deal of pain and discomfort. Luckily these alternative sinus infection remedies can help soothe your nose and get the mucus flowing again.
Use a Neti Pot or a Sinus Rinse
Using a sinus rinse and a neti pot is a great way to clear out your sinuses so you can breathe better, especially when you have a bad case of nasal congestion. Allergens and other irritants are washed away, while mucus is thinned out, making you feel less stuffy.
Take Quercetin
You may not have heard of quercetin, but this natural plant compound is a healthy antioxidant that can help stabilize the histamine producing cells in the body. The suggested oral dose is 400-500 mg, and it can be taken up to three times per day.
Warm-Up
Inhaling steam is a great way to warm up and moisturize your sinus passageways. Standing in a hot shower, or standing over a large bowl with a towel over your head, is highly effective and can help moisturize your sinus passageways.
Yoga
Yoga is an excellent way to stay flexible and limber, and can even help you drain mucus from your sinuses. While particular poses work better than others, the supported reclined cobbler’s yoga pose is an excellent one to try for relief.
Aromatherapy
There is no magic cure with aromatherapy, but it does smell fantastic and can even help open up the respiratory tract. If you are looking for a way to keep your home smelling great, yet keep the respiratory tract open, add some peppermint or eucalyptus to a diffuser or aromatherapy machine.
Is Your Sinus Medicine Useless?
Sinus medicine not working? If you’re taking medicine after medicine and your sinuses are still wreaking havoc, then it might be time for an OTC intervention. Wouldn’t it feel good to clear out that medicine cabinet? Read the rest of this entry »
Is My Sinus Infection Making Me Tired?
You feel worn-out, no matter how much sleep you get. You’re sluggish throughout the day. On top of that, every little thing seems to bug you. So what’s going on? In some cases — surprisingly — it might be sinus infection fatigue.
Sinus infections, or sinusitis, have long been associated with chronic fatigue syndrome, a health condition in which no amount of sleep seems to keep you your normal, alert self. (It’s important to note that a sinus infection doesn’t cause chronic fatigue syndrome, but the link is there.)
Sometimes, the fatigue that comes with a sinus infection can be extreme, and other sinusitis symptoms (such as facial pain, congestion and coughing) can lead to trouble sleeping, making the situation worse.
If you know you’re dealing with a sinus infection — or if you just can’t shake that tired feeling — get the advice of a doctor. There are certain home remedies, medicines and (for only the extreme cases) surgical options that could offer help.
In the meantime, if you’re trying to get some much-needed shuteye while dealing with a sinus infection, here are some tips.
Sleep on your back, propped up with a few pillows. Elevating your head and neck can help your sinuses drain easier.
Use a humidifier. Dry air can worsen sinusitis symptoms, so keep those moisture levels up.
Try herbal teas. Caffeine-free teas like chamomile, eucalyptus and lavender can soothe you and your sinuses. Plus, inhaling a bit of steam from your cup can help loosen your nasal passages.
Resist technology. It can be tempting to jump on your phone, tablet or laptop when your symptoms are preventing you from sleeping, but the light can disrupt your system and keep you up longer.
We know how frustrating it is to feel exhausted when you’re just trying to get better. The solutions are different for every patient, so we’d be happy to help you customize a plan to get you healthy as soon as possible.
