Exercising daily is a great habit to have. Getting your body moving daily can help with weight loss, improve circulation, boost your self-esteem, and give you energy. However, while exercising daily is recommended, there are certain times where you should sit it out. For instance, if you have a sinus infection, it is recommended that you reduce your playtime or sit it out until you recover, depending on the activity. Many people may not think to themselves, “can I exercise with a sinus infection,” unless you are an athlete or fitness enthusiast. For those who love and frequently exercise, the answer to that question varies.

A sinus infection is categorized as the swelling or inflammation of your sinuses. The inflammation and swelling can be caused by a variety of factors, such as nasal polyps, allergies, from a deviated septum, having a cold or non-allergic rhinitis. Some of the symptoms associated with a sinus infection include:

• Post-nasal drip
• Congestion
• Cough
• Fever
• Nasal obstruction
• Pain or pressure around the eyes and face
• Thick, yellowish or greenish mucus
• Foul-smelling nasal discharge
• Persistent cold symptoms

When Is It Ok to Exercise?

If you have no fever, mild to moderate exercise is ok, depending on how you feel. Low impact exercise can be helpful, as long as you do not have a fever and your symptoms are above the neck. Meaning your symptoms is only experienced above the neck, such as a sore throat, congestion, or a runny nose. Exercise releases adrenaline, which contracts blood vessels which could help decrease inflammation in your sinuses. An excellent low-impact exercise is yoga, which can help improve circulation and breathing, help white blood cell production, relax the mind and body, and can help facilitate healing. However, it is essential to remember to listen to your body when exercising with a sinus infection. Make sure you stop and rest if your body is telling you to do so.

When Is It Not Ok to Exercise?

If you have a fever, numerous muscle aches, or extreme fatigue hold off on the exercise. If you are experiencing symptoms below the neck, such as chest tightness, frequent coughing, or an upset stomach, do not exercise. Instead, rest and let your body heal. By jumping the gun, you can make yourself worse and potentially hurt yourself. Since your nasal passages are often clogged, that may cause dizziness that can affect balance, muscle control, and coordination. These adverse effects can make participation in sports such as hockey, running, and weight lifting difficult and dangerous. For example, if you are experiencing chest pressure along with your sinus infection and you exercise, you may have a hard time breathing. When breathing becomes difficult, the heart works faster, and that could lead to a possible stroke or heart attack. Your risk of dehydration also becomes more significant when you have a sinus infection, so sit it out if you are feeling under the weather.
