Unfortunately, many pregnant women come down with sinus infections. And though the nasal congestion, headaches and mucus discharge associated with sinusitis can be a health hassle anytime, these infections can prove to be even more inconvenient for moms to be.
If you’re expecting and you come down with a sinus infection, try these tips to get your health back in shape.
Drink plenty of water or healthy juices like apple, grape and orange. Dehydrating beverages, including soda and coffee, can work against your body’s defense systems.
Get plenty of water – in the air.
Activating a humidifier in your bedroom at night or breathing in steamy shower air for 10 to 15 minutes can do wonders for opening up sinus cavities.
See your doctor.
Pregnant women, especially those closer to their due dates, will need to make special health considerations for any illness. Consult with your physician or a specialist to determine the best ways to keep comfortable and well.
Discriminate between medicines.
Not all medicines are created equal, when a pregnant woman’s health is in concern. Be sure to let your doctor know you’re expecting when you seek sinusitis medication. Some types of antibiotics are approved for use during pregnancy, but others (including tetracycline and minocycline) aren’t.
If you need a pain medication or fever reducer during pregnancy, many doctors recommend acetaminophen, but not aspirin. (Naproxen and ibuprofen are not recommended for women in the third trimester.) Finally, some doctors advise against using antihistamines during pregnancy, due to a lack of research on fetal effects.
